A Driver’s co-Pilot – The Car Cruise Control

The car cruise control has been a standard feature in automobiles for some time now. The entire system is guided by a microwave radar and managed by a micro-controller cruise control and is installed in virtually all cars on the road today. It enables the driver to cruise while the car regulates its own speed. The cruise control feature is normally employed if you are driving along a major stretch of highway without any stop lights or intersections.

The system is usually mounted on the steering wheel where it is readily accessible on either side of the horn. The buttons are strategically placed on either side of the steering wheel and speed can be controlled with the touch of the buttons. Press the acceleration button instead of stepping on the gas; this is ideal when your car is accelerating gradually. Going for gas quickly, when you intend to accelerate burns fuel faster. The cancel and resume buttons are quite handy if you learn to use them effectively. In case you need to brake, you can cancel cruise and just resume when you don’t have to brake repeatedly.

The car cruise control acts as a co-pilot to the driver and unlike the traditional cruise control systems that utilize electronic throttle to maintain speed and engage the electromechanical braking in an emergency; today’s cruise control systems do not interfere in any way with the car’s dynamics. This is made possible as all cars have separate cruise controls which are tailor-made to do jobs according to the car’s build.

It is generally recommended to set your cruise control to a speed within the legal speed limit in your area and you don’t have to bother about being a lead foot with the gas pedal. The only thing that you have to worry about is steering your car and preventing it from veering into other lanes. Cruise can also reduce the use of gas and can be very fuel efficient since the car is running on constant speed as you are not applying the pressure on the pedal to maintain that speed and the car is literally doing it for you. Another distinct advantage of using the cruise control is to cautiously avoid breaking speed limit laws, especially nowadays when speed cameras are everywhere. Among the drawbacks are drivers’ tendency to go into a stupor which may consequently lead into an accident. Moreover, if your car does not have Electronic Stability Control, it can skid specially when driving on wet or icy roads when the control is active.

The car cruise control feature is a luxury in most vehicles and comes standard with almost every new vehicle manufactured today. A major factor that led to its development is the fact that it helps reduce the harmful exhaust gas emissions making it a green device. It was therefore received warmly by environmentalists as well as motorists from around the world. Prior to 1995, cruise control was just an option in cars rolled out from the production lines.
