The Road Rage Experience

Road rage is something that we will all probably experience at some point in our lives. It happens when there is a lot of traffic, when you are having a bad day or most often, when someone else’s driving is less than stellar and somehow inadvertently affects your ability to drive in a sane, calm manner.

Every year, there are numerous accidents that are the result of someone’s road rage. Someone who cuts someone else off because they are angry or are simply trying to get through traffic can cause a sudden backlash whereby other people who aren’t prepared for such driving maneuvers suddenly find themselves losing control over their vehicles. More than once, I have witnessed people becoming so enraged and angry that I almost called the police to report the person’s license plate number (which you can do by the way).

It’s funny when you think about it- of all the times that I have seen people behaving badly while driving, I can only remember one instance where there was actually a police officer who happened to see the entire thing unfold as well and who eventually caught the person off guard and gave them a citation. One of my friends recently told me a story about how she got in trouble because of her road rage. She was leaving work and was on her way to go somewhere else when she suddenly got stuck in a small line of traffic. She had two lanes to choose from that she could have been in, but both were going incredibly slow. Running late to her appointment, she started to become frustrated and was tailgating the people in front of her. When they wouldn’t go fast enough to her liking, she then switched lanes and tailgated the people in front of her. However, what she failed to notice was that in her blind rage to change lanes, she had cut someone off…someone who had been watching her actions the entire time: a police officer.

The police officer promptly pulled her over and wrote her a citation for tailgating. As she was telling me this story (which had taken place several years ago), I could still see how upset it made her, and I couldn’t help but laugh to myself. She still felt like the police officer was being unfair. Though I didn’t say it to her face, I couldn’t help but disagree. The police officer was simply doing his or her job, and if they were able to witness her driving erratically, then of course she deserved the ticket! Not only is tailgating someone incredibly dangerous, but what would have happened if she was weaving in and out of traffic and came across someone who was a nervous driver? Often times, when people aren’t as secure in their driving or if they simply aren’t paying attention, they may misinterpret the actions of other drivers and try to overcompensate with their driving as a result. What ends up happening is this. Take, for example, the fact that someone changes lanes suddenly and cuts you off. You may, as a result, slow down and suddenly change lanes to avoid them if you think that they are driving erratically. But then, what if they suddenly change lanes again at the same time? You have to be wary of other drivers because it may cause an accident.
