Paint Touch-Up

Modern paints retain their beauty for a very long time if well-maintained.  But no matter how carefully and meticulously you maintain your vehicle’s finish, there is no bullet-proof method of avoiding small paint chips or scuffs which mar the finish and detract from the vehicle’s overall look of quality and maintenance.  Therefore, periodic ally there will be a need for a paint touch-up of these small imperfections.

Paint problems can result from stone chips, minor impacts with parking barriers or other vehicles, or just dropping a small object on or against your vehicle in your own garage.  Modern paints are very strong, but when a break in the finish develops it will cause a degradation of the surrounding finish if not addressed and repaired quickly.  Your vehicle’s paint provides a thin yet strong barrier to protect the underlying steel, aluminum, plastic, or fiberglass materials from exposure to elements such as rain, snow, salt, and sunlight.  Once exposed, the underlying substrate can fall prey to problems such as rust and oxidation.  Additionally, the broken edges of the paint around the damaged paint will begin to loosen from the surface, bubble and peel.  A paint touch-up will solve all these problems, restore your vehicle’s finish, and halt any further degradation.

The methods of performing a paint touch-up are fairly simple and effective when performed by a trained technician.  The area where the paint and substrate is damaged must be thoroughly cleaned using the proper chemicals and any oxidation or damaged must be removed by physical methods such as scraping or sanding.  Once the substrate surface and the surrounding areas are clean, fresh color-matched paints can be applied using a touch-up brush, an airbrush or some other small touch-up paint gun.  A very thin layer of paint is applied which covers the damaged area completely and overlaps somewhat onto the surrounding undamaged panel.  If necessary, a thin layer of clearcoat is also applied to seal the fresh paint.  A heat source such as a small infrared lamp is often utilized, directing it at the newly painted area for a brief time, in order to quickly and completely cure the fresh paint.
